Factores encontrados en el uso de elementos de protección respiratoria (EPPr) en soldadores de una microempresa metalmecánica en la ciudad de Bogotá en 2023 | Factors found in the use of respiratory protection elements (PPE) in welders of a metalworking micro-enterprise in the city of Bogotá in 2023

Aunque los Elementos de Protección Personal (EPP), tradicionalmente constituyen el último nivel en la jerarquía de controles, su utilidad se ve limitada frente a diversos factores, dentro de los cuales se debe tener presente el comportamiento del trabajador en el uso de los mismos. En este trabajo se busca identificar los factores que determinan el uso de Elemento de Protección Personal respiratorio (EPPr) por los soldadores en una microempresa del sector metalmecánico en la ciudad de Bogotá. Para lograrlo, se realiza un estudio con enfoque etnográfico como metodología cualitativa, realizando un muestreo no probabilístico por criterio, realizando observaciones, entrevistas a los trabajadores y analizando los datos obtenidos por medio de la metodología de ordenación conceptual obteniendo categorías previstas y emergentes desde las entrevistas y el diario de campo. Los resultados obtenidos muestran cinco factores frente al uso de EPPr: Incomodidad, falta de motivación, desconocimiento, desconfianza en el dispositivo y gestión inapropiada de EPPr, destacándose en ellos la desconfianza que los trabajadores tienen en la protección que el EPPr les pueda brindar. Los resultados han sido comparados con otros estudios a nivel mundial frente al uso de protectores respiratorios en diversas actividades incluyendo labores de soldadura y fundición de metales.

Although Personal Protection Elements (PPE) traditionally constitute the last level in the hierarchy of controls, their usefulness is limited in the face of various factors, among which the worker's behavior in their use must be taken into account. This work seeks to identify the factors that determine the use of respiratory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by welders in a micro-enterprise in the metalworking sector in the city of Bogotá. To achieve this, a study is carried out with an ethnographic approach as a qualitative methodology, carrying out non-probabilistic sampling by criterion, carrying out observations, interviews with workers and analyzing the data obtained through the conceptual organization methodology, obtaining anticipated and emerging categories from the interviews and field diary. The results obtained show five factors regarding the use of PPE: Discomfort, lack of motivation, lack of knowledge, distrust in the device and inappropriate management of PPE, highlighting the distrust that workers have in the protection that PPE can provide them. The results have been compared with other studies worldwide regarding the use of respiratory protectors in various activities including welding and metal smelting.
