Análisis de la relación entre calidad de sitio y propiedades físicas de suelo en una cuenca de Chile Central | Analysis of the relationship between site quality and soil properties for a watershed in Central Chile

El manejo eficiente y sustentable de recursos silvícolas y pratenses requiere entender cómo las condiciones ambientales definen la acumulación de biomasa aérea a nivel de sitio. El contenido de agua en el suelo es clave para explicar el crecimiento de las plantas, siendo particularmente relevante en áreas con limitaciones hídricas. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la relación entre propiedades de suelo y la biomasa aérea para ecosistemas mediterráneos (bosque nativo, matorral espinoso y pradera) y plantaciones forestales de Pinus radiata en una cuenca de Chile central, hipotetizando que (1) las propiedades edáficas que determinan la disponibilidad de agua son capaces de explicar la biomasa y (2) el contenido de agua aprovechable es la propiedad más relevante en este aspecto. La predicción espacial de propiedades edáficas vinculadas con el contenido de agua en el suelo fue realizada hasta los 200 cm de profundidad mediante técnicas de mapeo digital con Random Forest. El análisis de las relaciones entre biomasa aérea, datos obtenidos a partir de múltiples iniciativas de parcelas de biomasa realizadas en el área de estudio, y las predicciones de propiedades de suelo fue llevado a cabo por medio de árboles de regresión y clasificación (CART). La predicción espacial de propiedades de suelo presentó ajustes adecuados en términos del error relativo (nRMSE) con un valor de 19,83% en promedio y un rango de 15,44 a 27,59%. Las mejores predicciones fueron obtenidas para densidad aparente y contenido de arena, mientras que capacidad de campo y punto de marchitez permanente fueron menos exactas. Los modelos CART presentaron muy buenos desempeños (nRMSE promedio de 14,38% con un rango entre 10,46 a 16,28%). Los resultados indican que la materia orgánica y macro porosidad, seguido del número poroso y densidad aparente, son más relevantes que el agua aprovechable para explicar el desarrollo de biomasa en pinos y el bosque nativo. La variación de densidad aparente a través del perfil sería la propiedad más relevante para un mayor desarrollo de biomasa en matorral y praderas, pero el grado de disturbios antrópicos y menor cantidad de datos impide establecer conclusiones definitivas en estos sistemas.

The efficient and sustainable management of forest and forage resources requires understanding of how environmental conditions affect biomass development in the site. Soil water content is key to explaining plant growth, being particularly relevant in areas with water limitations. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between soil properties and standing biomass for Mediterranean ecosystems (native forest, thorny scrub, and grassland) and Pinus radiata forest plantations in a central Chile basin, hypothesizing that (1) edaphic properties determining water availability can explain biomass and (2) usable water content is the most relevant property in this regard. The spatial prediction of edaphic properties linked to soil water content was performed up to 200 cm depth using digital mapping techniques with Random Forest. The analysis of the relationships between standing biomass, data obtained from multiple biomass plot initiatives carried out in the study area, and soil property predictions was carried out using regression and classification trees (CART). The spatial prediction of soil properties presented adequate adjustments in terms of relative error (nRMSE) with an average value of 19.83% and a range of 15.44 to 27.59%. The best predictions were obtained for bulk density and sand content, while field capacity and permanent wilting point were less accurate. The CART models showed very good performance (average nRMSE of 14.38% with a range between 10.46 and 16.28%). The results indicate that organic matter and macroporosity, followed by pore number and bulk density, are more relevant than usable water to explain biomass development in pines and native forest. The variation of bulk density across the profile would be the most relevant property for greater biomass development in scrub and grasslands, but the degree of anthropogenic disturbances and the lesser amount of data prevent definitive conclusions in these systems.
