Physiologische Untersuchungen am Stamm und im Kronenraum eines Fichtenaltbestandes nach experimenteller Manipulation des Wasser- und Ionenhaushaltes (Dachprojekt Solling) | Physiological investigations at the stem and in the crown of a Norway spruce stand after experimental manipulation of the water and ion-budget (roof project Solling)

Im Rahmen der EU-Projekte EXMAN (Experimental Manipulation of Forest Ecosystems) und NITREX (Nitrogen Saturation Experiments) wurde ein Großexperiment mit permanenter Dachkonstruktion unterhalb der Krone in einem heute 69 jährigen Fichtenbestand (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) im Solling/Deutschland angelegt. In zwei parallelen Experimenten werden die Auswirkungen der seit 1991 reduzierten Einträge von H+, SO42- und N-Komponenten (Entsauerungsexperiment) beziehungsweise ausgedehnter sommerlicher Trockenperioden mit intensiver Wiederbefeuchtung (Austrocknungsexperiment) untersucht und mit einem Kontrolldach sowie einer Kontrollfläche ohne Dach verglichen. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist, die durch die verminderten Säure- und Stickstoffeinträge bzw. sommerlichen Trockenperioden in Verbindung mit atmosphärischen Schadstoffeinträgen hervorgerufenen Reaktionen der oberirdischen Bestandeskompartimente darzustellen. Mit Hilfe eines Krans wurden von 1993 bis 1996 das Wachstum, die Schadsymptomatik, die Nährstoffsituation der Nadeln und physiologische Reaktionen wie Photosynthese, Transpiration und osmotisches Potenzial im Kronenraum beurteilt sowie der Saftfluss und die radialen Durchmesserschwankungen am Stamm bestimmt. Darüber hinaus wurden die Beziehungen der erhobenen Parameter zur Witterung und zur Bodenfeuchte untersucht. Beim Entsauerungsexperiment wurden mit vier bis fünfjähriger Verzögerung zeitlich gestaffelte Reaktionen innerhalb der oberirdischen Bestandeskomponente beobachtet. Die Entsauerung der Niederschläge bewirkte zunächst einen Rückgang der Stickstoffgehalte in den Nadeln, der bei gleichzeitigem Anstieg der Kalzium-, Magnesium- und Mangangehalte zu einer ausgewogenen Nährstoffbalance führte. Die verbesserte Nährstoffversorgung trug zu einem Rückgang der Nadelvergilbungen und Nadelverluste und damit zu einem günstigen optischen Erscheinungsbild bei. Am Ende der Untersuchungsperiode konnte ein Anstieg der Netto-Photosyntheseleistung und eine Zunahme des Durchmesser- und Höhenzuwachses beobachtet werden. Beim Austrocknungsexperiment reagierten die Fichten auf den Wassermangel ohne zeitliche Verzögerung und ohne zeitliche Staffelung innerhalb der oberirdischen Bestandeskomponente mit einem Rückgang des Durchmesser- und Höhenzuwachses und sehr starken Nadelverlusten. Es kam zu einer unmittelbaren Reduktion der Photosynthese und Transpiration sowie erhöhten osmotischen Werten. Die starke tägliche Schrumpfung des Stammradius kennzeichnete den angespannten Wasserzustand. Die Nadelelementgehalte wurden durch die Austrocknung mit Ausnahme reduzierter Mangan- und Aluminiumgehalte nicht nachhaltig beeinflusst. Auf die Wiederbefeuchtung reagierten die Fichten kurzfristig mit einem Anstieg der Transpiration, mit einer Abnahme der Nadelverluste und einer schnellen Erholung des Durchmesser- und Höhenzuwachses. Aufgrund steigender Nadel-Magnesiumgehalte durch Ausbringung von Tanksedimenten nach Ende der Austrocknung nahm der Anteil chlorotischer Nadeln ab, so dass die photosynthetische Leistung zunahm.

Within the framework of the EU-funded EXMAN (Experimental Manipulation of Forest Ecosystems) and NITREX (Nitrogen Saturation Experiments) project a large scale field experiment with a permanent roof construction below the canopy in a now 69-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) plantation at Solling/Germany was conducted. In two parallel experiments the responses to reduced throughfall input of H+, SO42- and N-compounds since 1991 (clean rain experiment) respectively to extended summer droughts with intensive rewetting (drought experiment) are investigated and evaluated against a roof control and an ambient control plot without roof. The objective of this study is to present the responses of above ground stand parameters to reduced acid and nitrogen inputs respectively summer droughts associated with atmospheric deposition inputs. With the help of a crane growth, vitality, needle nutrition and physiological reactions like photosynthesis, transpiration and osmotic potential in the crown are assessed as well as sap flow and diurnal changes in stem radii are investigated for the years 1993 to 1996. The relations between these parameters and climate as well as soil humidity are determined. With a delay of four to five years after beginning the clean rain experiment a temporal response sequence is observed within the above ground stand parameters. The first result of the reduced acid and nitrogen input was a decrease of the nitrogen needle content, which lead with a simultaneous increase of the calcium, magnesium- and manganese needle content to a well-balanced nutritional condition. The improved nutrition contributed to a decrease of needle chlorosis and needle losses and consequently the trees seemed more vigorous. At the end of the investigated period a rise of net-photosynthesis and an increase of annual diameter- and height increment could be observed. The trees of the drought experiment reacted on the water deficiency without delay and without temporal response sequence in the crown with a strong decrease of annual diameter- and height increment and strong needle losses. It came immediately to a reduction of net-photosynthesis and transpiration as well as to an increase of osmotic potential. A strong daily stem shrinkage marked the strained water situation of the trees. A durable influence of the reduced water supply on the needle contents could not be observed with exception of reduced manganese- and aluminium needle contents. The trees reacted on the rewetting with a short increase of transpiration, with a decline of needle losses and a quick recovery of the annual diameter- and height increment. On account of increasing magnesium needle contents by distribution of tank sediments after the drought period the part of chlorotic needles decreased and the photosythetic capacity increased.
