Since maize bean intercropping is not a common system in Germany, the nodulation of four cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris and two cultivars of P. coccineus in intercropping with silage maize was evaluated at the end of bean flowering. The root samples were taken in 2015 from a randomized field trial with four replications at the Thünen Institute of Organic Farming with six samples per plot. The number of root nodules, dry matter weight of nodules and nodule activity were assessed. The statistical analysis, which was conducted with the SAS-program for nonparametric ANOVA, showed significant differences for dry matter weight and number of root nodules between the bean cultivars.
