Uses of fine steel slag to mitigate the effects of moisture damage in asphalt mixtures

Steel slag has been proposed to replace fine fractions in hot mix asphalts (HMA) because this material has physical-mechanical properties that make it suitable for wearing courses. However, one of the main barriers to the use of these slags is the increase they cause in the final density of asphalt mixes. Therefore, the use of the fine fraction of steel slag in the mixtures can generate benefits in combating moisture damage and maintaining a relatively low density compared to the substitution of the coarse fraction of this same material. Aggregate-bitumen affinity studies were carried out based on 3 methods and water sensitivity evaluation tests. The findings showed that the samples with natural aggregates (Control_Mix) have a moisture resistance of 92%, measured by the indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR), the samples with steel slag replacement in the fraction of 0/2 mm (increase in density of 3.1%) have an ITSR value of 96% and the mixtures with replacement in the 0/4 mm fraction (increase in density of 4.6%) have an ITSR value of 98%. Our results suggest that replacing the fine fractions with EAFS improves the resistance to moisture damage of HMA, in addition to maintaining a similar density to mixtures containing only natural aggregates.
