The regional demand of alcoholic beverages. Impact of an increase in the special taxe | La demanda regional de bebidas alcohólicas en España. Impacto de un incremento de los impuestos especiales

[EN] This study analyzes the different responses in the consumption of alcoholic beverages by regions in Spain to changes in levels of prices and income. To this end income and price elasticities have been estimated for three ty pes of alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, and "other alcoholic drinks") through a complete AIDS-type demand system, using a panel of annual data from 1993 to 2000 for eight Spanish regions. The results of this study indicate that there are important differences in the household consumption and responses of alcoholic beverages among different regions, particularly regarding the consumption of wine and beer between the northern and southern halves of the peninsula. On the basis of these results regional returns from excise taxes and VAT have been simulated according to different tax scenarios.

[ES] El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la respuesta diferenciada del consumo de bebidas alcohólicas de las distintas regiones españolas ante cambios en los precios y la renta y simular las consecuencias de una variación del tipo de los impuestos especiales sobre bebidas alcohólicas. Para ello se han estimado las elasticidades renta y precio de tres tipos de bebidas alcohólicas (vino, cerveza y "otras" bebidas alcohólicas”) a través de un sistema completo de demanda tipo AIDS, utilizando un panel de datos anuales entre 1993 y 2000 para ocho grandes regiones españolas. Los resultados de este estudio permiten concluir que existen diferencias importantes en los hábitos de consumo de bebidas alcohólicas en los hogares entre las distintas regiones y especialmente en el consumo de vino y cerveza entre la mitad norte y la mitad sur de la península. A partir de los resultados de este estudio se han simulado los ingresos por impuestos especiales e IVA de las Comunidades Autónomas ante distintos escenarios impositivos.
