Ecofisiología del fuego en ambientes mediterráneos

El fuego es un elemento de la naturaleza capaz de modificar la composición vegetal y que a lo largo de la historia de la evolución ha contribuido a la selección de características fisiológicas. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido el de revisar la bibliografía que ha estudiado las características ecofisiológicas que permiten a algunas especies vegetales sobrevivir a su efecto, especialmente en climas mediterráneos. Para ello, se han recopilado en primer lugar las características del fuego, cómo se establece su régimen y qué regímenes existen en ambientes mediterráneos. Posteriormente, se han estudiado las dos estrategias principales de supervivencia vegetal (rebrotadora y germinadora) y las adaptaciones ecofisiológicas que presentan estas especies a través de parámetros fotosintéticos, hidráulicos, de reservas de carbono o el estudio de sus estructuras reproductivas. También se ha tenido en cuenta cómo las erupciones volcánicas afectan a la vegetación. Finalmente, se han tratado las diferentes perspectivas en cuanto al manejo de incendios en Canarias, el cuál sigue siendo un debate abierto. Entre las conclusiones principales de este trabajo de revisión se destaca la importancia de entender al fuego en su régimen y las diferencias fisiológicas de las dos estrategias principales.

Fire is a nature´s element capable of modifying plant composition and that throughout the history of evolution has contributed to the selection of physiological characteristics. The aim of this work has been to review the literature that has been studying the ecophysiological characteristics that allow some plant species to survive its effect, especially in Mediterranean climates. To this end, we have first compiled the characteristics of fire, how its regime is established and what regimes exist in Mediterranean environments. Subsequently, the two main plant survival strategies (resprouting and seeders) and the ecophysiological adaptations that these species present through photosynthetic, hydraulic and carbon stock parameters and the study of their reproductive structures . We have also taken into account how volcanic eruptions affect vegetation. Finally, the different perspectives on fire management in the Canary Islands have been discussed, which is still an open debate. Among the main conclusions of this review work, the importance of understanding the fire regime and the differences between strategies.
