Generación de librerías optimizadas con cuantificación de incertidumbres para cálculos realistas (BEPU) de reactores nucleares de agua ligera

La simulación computacional de los procesos físicos que tienen lugar en el núcleo de un reactor nuclear permite, gracias a la validación con datos experimentales, el análisis de múltiples escenarios y es de vital importancia en el diseño, operación y evaluación de la seguridad de las centrales nucleares. En el pasado, los métodos computacionales empleados en análisis de seguridad incluían modelos conservadores para contrarrestrar las aproximaciones realizadas. Sin embargo, la tendencia actual es evolucionar hacia los cálculos de estimación óptima o best-estimate que incluyen datos e hipótesis más realistas. Prueba de ello, es el desarrollo del Proyecto Europeo correspondiente al 7º Programa Marco, NURESAFE, donde uno de los paquetes de trabajo está dedicado a la simulación best-estimate del accidente de rotura de línea de vapor (MSLB) en un reactor PWR de cuatro lazos. Se trata de un transitorio fuertemente asimétrico que requiere para su análisis preciso del uso de códigos neutrónicos con cinética tridimensional acoplados con códigos termohidráulicos. Adicionalmente, los cálculos best-estimate deben ir acompañados de una rigurosa evaluación de las incertidumbres de los resultados dando lugar a los análisis BEPU (best-estimate plus uncertainties). Conscientes de la importancia del papel de las incertidumbres el Comité de Ingeniería Nuclear de la OECD/NEA impulsó en el año 2005 la creación del grupo de expertos EGUAM (Expert Group on Uncertainty Analysis in Modeling ) que a su vez desarrolló el OECD/NEA Benchmark for Uncertainty Analysis in Best-Estimate Modeling for Design, Operation and Safety Analysis of LWRs (UAM) cuyo objetivo es la cuantificación de incertidumbres en todas las fases de los cálculos acoplados neutrónicos/termohidráulicos en reactores nucleares. En el contexto del proyecto NURESAFE y del ejercicio internacional de UAM se ha desarrollado esta tesis doctoral. El objetivo es identificar y propagar las diferentes fuentes de incertidumbre en cálculos neutrónicos y generar librerías optimizadas de secciones eficaces homogeneizadas en pocos grupos, tanto a nivel nodal como a nivel de pincell, que incluyan una cuantificación de dichas incertidumbres. El uso de estas librerías, que podrían llamarse avanzadas, en cálculos de difusión con simuladores de núcleo permitiría llevar a cabo el análisis BEPU de transitorios operacionales en reactores de agua ligera. El calificativo de librería avanzada hace referencia por tanto a dos ideas principales. La primera idea es la inclusión en la librería, junto con las constantes homogeneizadas, de las covarianzas, lo que posibilita la cuantificación de incertidumbres en cálculos de núcleo completo. Para ello se han identificado las fuentes de incertidumbre neutrónicas. Por un lado, las fuentes primarias provienen del conocimiento incierto de los datos nucleares básicos incluidos en las librerías evaluadas y las incertidumbres en la geometría e isotopía iniciales también llamadas incertidumbres tecnológicas. Por otro lado, al propagar ambos tipos de incertidumbre a través del esquema de cálculo estándar empleado para el análisis tridimensional de reactores (cálculos de celda, de elemento y núcleo), se irán añadiendo progresivamente nuevas incertidumbres asociadas a las aproximaciones en los modelos y métodos utilizados. En esta tesis se hace un ejercicio de propagación a las librerías de constantes homogeneizadas tanto de las incertidumbres debidas a los datos nucleares como de las tecnológicas, evaluándose la importancia relativa de cada una de ellas. Así mismo se evalúan las incertidumbres asociadas a los métodos y modelos de cada fase de cálculo. Para ello se ha utilizado el sistema de códigos SCALE6.2. Tras haber obtenido las librerías con cuantificación de incertidumbres, se hace un ejercicio de propagación de incertidumbres en cálculos tridimensionales de núcleo completo, tanto a nivel nodal como pin-by-pin, utilizando el código de difusión COBAYA. La segunda idea que subyace en el término de librería avanzada es que permita realizar cálculos de difusión best-estimate, es decir, que conduzca a resultados lo más próximos posible a los que proporcionaría teoría de transporte. Para ello, se han evaluado las técnicas de homogenización, tanto a nivel nodal como a nivel de pincell, y se ha tenido en cuenta el fuerte acoplamiento existente entre el código de transporte de elemento empleado y el simulador de núcleo. En esta tesis, los factores de discontinuidad nodales y por pin-cell incluidos en las librerías han sido determinados a partir de los resultados de transporte proporcionados por el código de elemento teniendo en cuenta la discretización del operador de bajo orden, en este caso difusión, utilizado en COBAYA tanto a nivel nodal como pin-bypin. Por otra parte, y teniendo en cuenta que las librerías suelen estar tabuladas en función de las variables de realimentación, se ha desarrollado una metodología basada en la utilización de coeficientes de sensibilidad para minimizar los errores de interpolación al emplear dichas librerías tabuladas en simuladores de núcleo, optimizando el número de cálculos de elemento requerido. Se ha llevado a cabo un análisis de los efectos de esta optimización sobre distintos transitorios operacionales en el marco del proyecto NURESAFE. En conclusión, se propone la secuencia de cálculo SCALE6.2/COBAYA como una herramienta potente para el análisis neutrónico BEPU, generando con SCALE las librerías de secciones eficaces optimizadas con cuantificación de incertidumbres para su empleo por el simulador de núcleo COBAYA. ABSTRACT Computational modeling of the physical processes which take place in a nuclear reactor enables, thanks to the validation against experimental data, the analysis of multiple scenarios useful for design, operation and safety assessment of nuclear power plants. In the past, the computational methods used for safety analysis included conservative models in order to counteract the approximations assumed. However, the current trend is to evolve to the best-estimate calculations which include data and hypothesis more realistic. An evidence of this, is the development of the European Project of the 7th Framework Programme NURESAFE, where one of the work packages is focused on a best-estimate simulation of a MSLB transient on a four-loops PWR. Additionally, best-estimate calculations should be completed with a rigorous quantification of the uncertainties in the results, giving rise to the BEPU (best-estimate plus uncertainties) analysis. Aware of the importance of the role of uncertainties, the OECD/NEA Nuclear Science Committee promoted in 2005 the creation of the Expert Group on Uncertainty Analysis in Modelling (EGUAM) which carried out the “OECD Benchmark for Uncertainty Analysis in Best- Estimate Modelling for Design, Operation and Safety Analysis of LWRs”, whose objective is to quantify the uncertainties at all stages of coupled neutronic/thermalhydraulic nuclear reactor calculations. In the context of NURESAFE Project and UAM benchmark this PhD Thesis has been developed. The objective is to identify and propagate the different sources of uncertainties in neutronic calculations and to generate advanced libraries of few-group homogenized crosssections, at nodal and pin-by-pin level, including a quantification of those uncertainties. The use of these libraries in diffusion codes with core simulators would allow to perform BEPU transient analyses in LWRs. The term of advanced library refers to two main ideas. The first one is the inclusion into the library, in conjunction with the homogenized parameters, of the covariances, which make possible the uncertainty quantification in full core calculations. To this aim, the sources of neutronic uncertainties have been identified. In one hand, the primitive sources come from the uncertain knowledge in basic nuclear data included in the evaluated libraries and the uncertainties in geometry and the initial isotope concentration (also called technological uncertainties). On the other hand, when both types of uncertainties are propagated through the standard calculation scheme used to the 3D reactor analysis (cell-physics, lattice and core calculations), new uncertainties associated to approximations in methods and models are being progressively added. In this PhD Thesis a quantification exercise to the homogenized cross-section libraries is performed for nuclear data and technological uncertainties, assessing the relative importance of each of them. In the same way, the uncertainties associated to the methods and models of each calculation phase are estimated. For this task, SCALE 6.2 system has been used. After obtaining libraries with uncertainty quantification, a propagation exercise is performed in 3D full core calculations, at nodal and pin-by-pin level, using COBAYA diffusion code. The second idea related to the “advanced” term is that the advanced library should allow carrying out best-estimate diffusion calculations, that is, the obtaining of results as closer as possible to those which would be obtained by transport theory. For this, the homogenization techniques, at nodal and pin-by-pin level, have been evaluated and the thigh coupling existing between the transport code and the core simulator has been taken into account. In this PhD Thesis the nodal and pin-cell discontinuity factors included in the libraries have been computed based on transport results provided by the lattice code taking into account the discretization of the low-order operator, in this case diffusion, employed in COBAYA, at nodal and pin-by-pin level. On other hand, and taking in consideration that libraries are usually tabulated as function of feedback variables, a new methodology has been developed. This methodology is based on the usage of sensitivity coefficients in order to minimize the interpolation errors when using the tabulated libraries in core simulators, optimizing the number of lattice calculations required. It has been carried out an analysis of the effects of this optimization over different transients within the frame of NURESAFE project. In conclusion, the sequence SCALE6.2/COBAYA is proposed as a robust tool for BEPU neutronic analyses, generating with the first one the cross-sections libraries with uncertainty quantification to be used in the second one.
