Ferðamálafræði við Háskóla Íslands: Hver er staðan eftir nám? | Tourism Studies at the University of Iceland: Status after graduation

Flestir þeir sem starfa í ferðaþjónustu í dag vinna við almenn þjónustustörf og er menntunarstigið í greininni ekki mjög hátt. Háskóli Íslands býður upp á nám í ferðamálafræði á háskólastigi en það gerir Háskólinn á Hólum einnig. Ferðamálafræðin sem kennd er við Háskóla Íslands hefur þótt of fræðileg að mati atvinnulífsins, því voru tekin viðtöl við fulltrúa atvinnulífsins um álit þeirra á náminu og einnig var viðhorf nemenda skoðað. Litið var til stöðu greinarinnar í dag og hvað gert er til að þróa frekari þekkingu innan hennar. Skoðað var hlutverk Hæfnisetursins og fyrirrennara þess. Framkvæmdar hafa verið hæfnigreiningar á störfum innan ferðaþjónustunnar og þær nýttar til að útbúa námskrár sem ætlaðar eru til að auka hæfni og gæði í störfum ferðaþjónustunnar. Gerðum við samanburð á viðhorfum nemenda og fulltrúa atvinnulífsins, bárum saman við námskrá Háskólans um hvaða kröfur eru gerðar til nemenda í ferðamálafræði og þau hæfniviðmið sem Háskólinn setur. Helstu niðurstöðurnar voru þær að aðilar atvinnulífsins telja nám í ferðamálafræði við Háskóla Íslands vera of fræðilegt fyrir almenn störf í ferðaþjónustu og að skortur er á hagnýtni varðandi uppbyggingu og innihald námsins. Háskóli Íslands setur fram hæfniviðmið óháð kröfum atvinnulífsins og er skólinn að standast þau viðmið. Mat nemenda á náminu var frekar mismunandi og ekki allir á einni skoðun um hagnýtni námsins né hve vel það myndi henta eftir að skóla lyki. Flestir voru á því að námið væri ekki nægilega hagnýtt þegar á heildina væri litið en skiptar skoðanir voru um einstök námskeið.

Most people working in tourism today are in general service and the education level within the sector is relatively low. Both the University of Iceland (UI) and the University at Hólar (UH) offer a study in tourism as a first-degree education at a university level. The study at UI has, by the tourism industry in Iceland, been considered to be too theoretical. For that reason, interviews were conducted with representatives from the industry and students at UI to get their views on it. Questions were asked around the current status of the industry and what plans are in place to further develop the knowledge base within. The role of the Skill-Centre was investigated and its predecessor. Skill gaps analyses have been conducted on roles within the tourism sector and the results used to create educational programs intended to improve capability and the quality within the industry in Iceland. Comparison studies were conducted on differences in views between students and industry representatives and the differences between the educational programs relating to requirements and demands towards students and the quality standards that the university sets itself. The main conclusions were that the industry representatives consider the tourism study at UI too theoretical for general roles within the sector and there is a lack of pragmatic approach towards the setup and contents of the study. The UI complies with the quality standards they set themselves but the standards do not reflect the requirement from the industry. The students did not agree on what value it gave them once completed. Most believed the study was not pragmatic enough but the view varied between courses.
