Nearly 43 million passengers are transported with Norwegian car ferries yearly; in other words, this topic comprises the safety of a large number of people. Compared to other segments, there has been conducted relatively few studies in this area of the shipping industry. The purpose of this thesis was to clarify the crew opinion of the risks involved when evacuating a car ferry, and how the safe manning situation influences the risks. To do this we conducted a qualitative study with the thesis question: “How does the ferry crew approach the issues involving evacuation, regarding today’s safe manning situation?” In order to obtain the data to answer the thesis question nine semi-structured interviews on board five different ferries in two companies. The informants include both officers and ratings from all departments on board, excluding personnel not a part of the safe manning plan. The results are linked up to safety theories and a research article by Safetec (Bye et al., 2014), and are debated in chapter 5.0. Results of the study show that the crew over all is unsatisfied with todays safe manning situation.
