Show more [+] Less [-]This study at surveying the trees of public concern existing within the city and county of Lisbon and to provide recommendations for their best maintenance for the future. To perform these objectives, all the trees classified as public concern trees were surveyed and their location and dendrometric characteristics were recorded. The stability, growth condition and maintenance expectancies were evaluated. The online database of the Portuguese Forest Service was used to find the pertinent trees and a registration form was created to record the above mentioned information. The results showed the need to perform maintenece pruning in 67% of the surveyed trees, corresponding 50% to dead branch removal and 17% to canopy cleaning. Additionally, it was stated that 13% of the studied trees needed to have ther pavement cut-outs enlarged. Only them 14% of the surveyed trees were correctly identified as trees of public concern and had any kind of complementary information relating to their characteristics and importance. It was concluded that most of those trees are in need not only of improved maintenance, but also of publicity and public awareness of their patrimonial value
