Show more [+] Less [-]The main goal of the present study is to contribute to the evaluation of the species Jatropha curcas L. (physic nut) potential for biodiesel production in the Cape Verde island of Santiago. A characterization of several populations of wild and cultivated plants in different ecological conditions of the island, as well of the existing 13 ecotypes in the INIDA germplasm bank at S. Jorge dos Órgãos, was made for several morphological characters, fruit and seed production, seed oil content, and fatty acid composition of the oil. Seed and fruit production was in general very low, with the exception of Chã de Vaca accession, and the wild/cultivated populations showed a higher production compared with the genebank material. Oilseed content was somewhat lower than previously reported and very variable from 15.6% to 35%. A correlation between oilseed content and seed weight was found for the wild/cultivated populations but not for the genebank material. Fatty acid profile of seed oil was similar to previous reports, with high levels of linoleic and linolenic acids, except for the accessions Loura, Chã de Vacas and 17 from genebank which showed a higher content of oleic acid.
