Economic Aspects of Sugar Beet Production and Biodiversity: Effects of Ban on Neonicotinoids Use

The article evaluates potential economic effects of the ban on neonicotinoid-based insecticides on sugar beet cultivation in Slovakia. It analyzes the change in costs and revenues in four scenarios covering the change in costs as well as the decline in revenues by 0 to 40%. Considering the increase in costs as well as the likely decrease in yields, the overall negative impact of the exclusion of neonicotinoids can be estimated from EUR 343.2 per ha (optimistic estimate) to EUR 1,111.4 per ha (pessimistic estimate). Even with an optimistic estimate, sugar beet cultivation would be loss-making in Slovakia.
