Sugar Consumption in the Index of Consumer Prices

Sugar can be seen as a fundamental commodity needed across the food industry and also in households for actual preparation of food. It is sugar purchased directly by households that is the subject of this paper, which aims to analyse sugar consumption within the consumer price index. Attention is paid to comparing the price development of the commodity in Czechia and neighbouring economies using both correlation and graphical analysis. This is followed by a comparison of the weight of sugar consumption by households within the consumer basket, including the evolution over time comparing the given countries. Finally, the relationship between sugar prices and its substitutes and complements is assessed using data from the Czech Republic and whether it is consistent with microeconomic theory.
