Importance of Small Grain Silage in Dairy Cattle Nutrition

Intensive dairy cattle business may be considered industrial production for a reason. In The Balkans, to a large degree, it is based on numerous findings from developed countries, where the animal husbandry is highly intensive, considering both selection and nutrition. Just like in the USA, the most productive cattle breed is Holstein, while corn silage, as well as alfalfa hay or silage, are most important in animal nutrition. However, we are witnesses of climate changes, which are not suitable for alfalfa, and even less suitable for corn, especially in the absence of irrigation. The production of sufficient amounts and proper quality of corn silage tends to be a tough task. Furthermore, the development of energy crisis, which will be more drastic in the decades to come, is going to turn the importance of corn utilization in a direction of precious source for ethanol production. Due to that, there is a growing importance of finding other potential crops for ensiling to replace corn. For this reason, there is increased importance of small grain research as feed in ruminant nutrition. This particular research is a review of some more important results and experiences within this field. Considering applied methods, this research was a review, based on analysis of retrieved published data.
