Influence of some salts of heavy metals on sulfur bacteria Lamprocystis sp.

The growth of phototrophic sulfur bacteria Lamprocystis sp. under the influence of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mM of CdSO4, ZnSO4, Pb(NO3)2 and CuSO4 was investigated. The control medium did not contain metal salt. The highest inhibition of growth was caused by CuSO4, and Pb(NO3)2 had weaker effect. These salts at the concentration 0.5 mM and higher have decreased the biomass accumulation for 85 and 58% respectively. Addition of CdSO4 or ZnSO4 caused the decrease of biomass accumulation only at high salts concentrations in the medium. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the main photosynthetic pigments in the cells at these conditions was determined. Addition of salts of heavy metals to the growth medium of Lamprocystis sp. decreased the pigments content in the cells, and inhibited culture growth.
