Use of biotechnology in two bamboo species propagation

Physical qualities, low cost and availability of bamboo trees make the material ideal for building houses, furniture, decorative and utilitarian crafts. The development of new plantations is neeed for the sustainable use of bamboos. The in vitro propagation is an effective way. This work shows the main results in the in vitro propagation of two bamboo species adapted to climatic conditions of Cuba: Bambusa vulgaris var. vittata A. & C. Riviere and Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxburgh) Nees. Axillary buds, from plants rejuvenated in greenhouse, were used for the in vitro establishment. Fungicides were applied before selection. Effect of growth regulators was determinate in multiplication and rooting phases. The best results for axillary buds establishment were achieved by adding 6-BAP (2.5 mg.l-1) to culture medium and place the flasks in growth chambers of sunlight. Higher coefficients of multiplication were obtained during multiplication phase by adding 2.5 and 3.0 mg.l 6-BAP to the culture medium depending on the species. The highest percentages of plants with root formation and subsequently survival in acclimatization phase was obtained by keeping the plants for 10 days in culture media with different concentrations of auxins. Plants grown in acclimatization phase were delivered to nurserymen after 45 days. It is possible to develop productive processes that combine techniques of biotechnology and traditional breeding methods. Key words: Bambusa vulgaris, Dendrocalamus strictus, organogenesis
