Outbreak of aspergillosis in broiler chickens

In January 2014, starting-chick mortalities with respiratory symptoms were observed at four days old in a broiler flock in Fukushima prefecture. The outbreak ended in approximately seven days and the mortality rate was 7.6%. To determination the cause of death, chicks underwent necropsies. Scattered and yellowish white fine nodules were found in the lungs and air sacs; histopathologically, granulomatous pneumonia and necrosis in the lungs and granulomas in the brain were observed. Fungal hyphae were observed in these lesions. A mycology inspection resulted in the isolation of Aspergillus fumigatus. Our results revealed that this outbreak was a form of chicken aspergillosis that was caused by A. fumigatus. As measures to prevent future outbreaks, we instructed farmers to increase the overall number of disinfections and to disinfect and dry the broiler house thoroughly. Farmers were specifically instructed to sufficiently disinfect and dry the litter, change the paper mat used for feeding, record the temperature and humidity in the broiler house, and optimize the feeding environment. After these measures were implemented, aspergillosis outbreaks no longer occurred.
