Mycoses in poultry

Avian mycoses are common in poultry. They are usually opportunistic infections that occur in young or unhealthy birds. Aspergillosis and candidiasis are common mycoses in chickens. Aspergillosis of chickens usually results from the inhalation of fungal conidia and affects the respiratory system including the lungs and air sacs. Small white-yellow nodular lesions can be observed at necropsy; these lesions are histologically composed of necrotic debris, inflammatory cells, and branching hyphae. Candidiasis affects the upper-digestive tract mucosa. The causative agent of candidiasis is histologically observed as both small yeasts and hyphae-like structures. Zygomycosis is rare in chickens. Diagnosis should be based on the results of pathological examinations and fungal culture.
