Effects of number of leaves per truss on yield and yield components in single-truss tomato production

Tomato plants with 4, 10, and 13 leaves per truss in single-truss tomato production were compared to investigate effects of number of leaves on yield. The plants were grown in a greenhouse using a nutrient film technique. "10 leaves per truss" is the standard treatment (control) and the main shoot was pinched at two leaves above the first truss. In "13 leaves per truss", the five leaves above the truss were increased by changing pinching node order. In "4 leaves per truss", the leaves were removed except two leaves above and below the truss. The fresh fruit yield was increased with increasing the number of leaves above the truss but not influenced by the leaf removal. In "13 leaves per truss", the high fresh fruit yield would be caused by the high dry weight yield which resulted from the high total dry matter production. Also, it's thought that the high total dry matter production originated in the high light interception from an increase in the leaf area. On the other hand, in "4 leaves per truss", no influence by leaf removal on the fresh fruit and dry weight yield were observed although the low light interception by a decrease in the leaf area resulted in the low total dry matter production. These results would be caused by high dry matter partitioning to the fruits.
