Secondary conidium-like structures formed by Monochaetia monochaeta NBRC 33068

Monochaetia monochaeta NBRC 33068, isolated from a leaf of Rhododendron pulchrum, formed secondary conidium-like structures. In the early stage of its proliferation on agar media, some parts of the colony were humectate, slimy, and resembled a colony of yeast. Cultures of single conidia and secondary conidium-like structures extended germ tubes, which branched to form hyphae, from which secondary conidium-like structures were produced. Most of these structures were cylindrical to spindle-shaped at an early stage, while forked and irregular-shaped structures with septa were later observed. These were similar to the secondary conidia reported for Monochaetia lutea. The secondary conidium-like structures of the present fungus were also formed on a leaf of R. pulchrum. Formation of such structures before producing conidia is considered to be an important dispersion strategy for coelomycetous fungi that produce conidiomata on the host plant after invasion.
