Effects of rice maximum feeding on growth and meat quality of Hakata Ichibandori chickens

We investigated the effects of rice maximum feeding, as well as the effects of varying the timing of the introduction of such rice, on the growth and meat quality of Hakata Ichibandori chickens. We divided The chickens were divided 0-day-old chickens at random into four experimental groups and a control group. We replaced 100% of the corn in the formula diet with whole-grain hulled rice (WGHR) for two of the experimental groups, and with whole-grain unhusked rice (WGUR) for the remaining two experimental groups. We fed four experimental groups of chickens crushed rice until the 3rd week. One WGUR group and one WGHR group had the rice introduced into their feed from the 4th week. The other two experimental groups had the rice introduced in the 6th week. In all cases, substitution of corn with rice continued until the 9th week. The control group received a usual formula diet with no rice. Growth did not differ among the five groups. However, WGUR groups had low metabolic energy (ME:2,880kcal/kg). The edible meat ratio and the abdominal fat ratio did not differ among the five groups. However, the ratio of gizzard weight to live body weight in the WGUR group was significantly higher than that in the other groups. Moreover, the ratios of oleic acid in the rice-fed groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. These findings suggest that neither maximum feeding with whole-grain rice nor varying the timing of the introduction of such rice significantly influence the growth and meat quality of Hakata Ichibandori chickens. Substituting corn with whole-grain rice produces chicken meat with high oleic acid content.
