Secagem de milho colhido em espiga para seleção de plantas-mãe | Drying corn harvested as cobs for selection of mother plants

A secagem é uma etapa importante no complexo de produção de sementes. É considerada uma das operações mais críticas que está diretamente relacionada com as perdas de qualidade fisiológica. As sementes de milho são sementes ortodoxas, em que a dessecação, tanto natural, quanto artificial, é essencial para finalizar o programa de desenvolvimento e preparálas para eventos germinativos após reidratação. A intensidade das perdas de qualidade das sementes está associada principalmente ao teor de água inicial das sementes, temperatura do ar de secagem e a genética do material. No presente trabalho, o objetivo foi avaliar a sensibilidade de secagem de diferentes genótipos de milho colhidos em espigas, realizando a secagem artificial em diferentes teores de água e temperatura de secagem. Foram cultivadas 6 linhagens de milho da empresa DuPont, divisão Pioneer Sementes Ltda, no distrito de Morrinhos - GO. As espigas foram colhidas manualmente em três graus de umidade (40, 35 e 30%) e secas artificialmente em dois secadores de pequena escala a 35 ou 43 °C até atingirem teor de água de 10 a 12%. Após a secagem as espigas foram debulhadas manualmente e, em seguida, tratadas com fungicidas e enviadas ao laboratório para os testes de germinação, teste de frio e teste frio modificado. Foram observadas diferenças estatísticas nas variáveis avaliadas, permitindo concluir que a sensibilidade de secagem de sementes de milho colhidas em espiga é dependente da linhagem. Ao iniciar a secagem artificial com teores de água mais elevados e temperaturas de secagem do ar mais baixa obtém-se melhores resultados em termos de qualidade fisiológica das sementes de milho. A temperatura do ar de secagem de 43 °C reduz a qualidade fisiológica das sementes.

Drying is an important step in the complex of seed production and is considered one of the most critical operations and is directly related to loss physiological quality. Corn seeds are orthodox seeds and desiccation either natural or artificial is essential to complete the developmental stages and prepare the seeds for germination after rehydration events. The intensity of seed quality losses is mainly associated to water content of the seeds, air drying temperatures and genotypes. In this study the objective was to assess the sensitivity of different genotypes to drying processes as harvested corn cobs, carrying out artificial drying at different water contents and drying temperatures. Six maize genotypes were grown by DuPont, division Pioneer Seeds Ltda., at Morrinhos-GO. The corn cobs were manually harvested at three different levels of humidity (40, 35 and 30%) and dried artificially in two smallscale dryers with hot air at 35 or 43 °C to a water content of 10-12%. Afterwards the cobs were shelled manually and then treated with fungicides and sent to the laboratory for testing by means of the warm test, cold test and modified cold test. Statistical differences were determined on the variables, which led to conclude that the sensitivity to drying of corn kernels harvested on the cob is dependent on the genotype. Best results in terms of physiological maize seed quality are obtained starting artificial drying with higher water contents and lower air temperatures. Air temperatures of 43 °C for drying reduce the physiological quality of the seeds.
