Effects of moisture content of woody biomass on properties of milled wood flour produced using a vibration rod mill

Mechano-chemical methods for modifying woody biomass proceed in the presence of liquid reagents. In this study, we investigated the effect of the moisture content of the woody biomass on the properties of milled wood flour. Japanese cedar chips conditioned to moisture contents of 0.0% to 20.0% were milled for 0 to 180 min using a high-speed vibration rod mill. We analyzed the wood flour to determine crystallinity, the contents of hollo-cellulose, alpha-cellulose, Klason lignin, and 80% ethanol aqueous extractive. Compared with wood chips with lower moisture contents, those with higher moisture contents produced milled wood flour with higher alpha-cellulose contents, higher crystallinities, and lower 80% ethanol aqueous extractives. For the wood chips with 20.0% moisture content, there was less decrease of crystallinity during milling, even when the milling time was longer than 60 min. The moisture content of the wood chips did not affect the hollo-cellulose and Klason lignin contents of the milled wood flour.
