Utilization of spray pollination for artificial pollination in stone fruit

Artificial pollination is important to secure fruit set in peach varieties of male sterility, in plum and sweet cherry indicating self-incompatibility. However, efficiency and labor saving of the artificial pollination are demanded because the labor that artificial pollination requires is big, and work centers in a short term of the flowering stage. In late years, spray pollination was developed as saving of labor-like artificial pollination, and practical use of the spray pollination advances with kiwifruit or Japanese pear. In this examination, the use of spray pollination with stone fruits that includes peach, plum and sweet cherry were examined and evaluated the utility. It was revealed that solution of 10% sucrose, 0.1% agar and 1% Tween80 ware suitable for the solution to suspend the pollen of stone fruits. In pollen density (w/v), it was thought that 1% was suitable with peach and sweet cherry, and 2% was suitable with plum. Shortening of the time for pollination was possible than the current method by all dispersion methods investigated. However, it was thought that the practical use was difficult because the quantity of the pollen to use for spray pollination with stone fruit was 3.5 - 7 times of the current method. But it was suggested that spray pollination could be used after the rain that could not be pollinated by the current method.
