Cultivation of autumn-blooming, small-flowered chrysanthemum with reduced application of phosphate and potassium fertilizers

To develop techniques to reduce/optimize fertilizer applications in the production of small-flowered chrysanthemum based on the levels of nutrients accumulated in the soil, autumn-blooming, small-flowered chrysanthemum was grown with lower fertilizer rates in farmer's field plots consisting of the three major soils of Okinawa (Kunigami-mahji, Shimajiri-mahji, and Jahgaru), respectively. The results suggested that a combined application of compost and basal chemical fertilizers can reduce the rates of phosphate and potassium in the fertilizers by 70 and 40%, respectively, in Kunigami-mahji containing >-60 and >-25 mg/100g of available phosphate and exchangeable potassium, respectively. In Shimajiri-mahji containing >-30mg/100g of available phosphate and exchangeable potassium, respectively, it may possible to eliminate phosphate and potassium from basal chemical fertilizers if the fertilizers are applied in conjunction with chicken manure. In Jahgaru containing >-75 and >-60mg/100g of available phosphate and exchangeable potassium, respectively, the combined application of cattle manure and basal chemical fertilizers can reduce the rates of phosphate and potassium in the fertilizers by 40%, respectively.
