Salt tolerance of zucchini at different growth stages

Moderately salt tolerant zucchini was grown in 0, 50, or 100 mmol /L NaCl to investigate at which growth stage zucchini acquires salinity tolerance. The NaCl treatments were started before germination or every other day until the tenth day after germination. Seedlings were harvested 19 days after sowing. NaCl treatments significantly inhibited stem elongation. Leaf number decreased only in the 100 mmol /L NaCl treatments starting 7 days or more after germination. NaCl treatments tended to increase stem thickness. The fresh weights of leaf and stem were not changed by 50 mmol /L NaCl, but they decreased significantly in 100 mmol /L NaCl treatments starting 7 days or more after germination. NaCl treatments increased root fresh weight except for the 100 mmol /L NaCl treatments starting 7 days or more after germination. The water content in all organs was almost the same as that of the control except in the 100 mmol /L NaCl treatments starting 7 days or more after germination. NaCl treatments tended to stimulate root growth except for the 100 mmol /L NaCl treatments starting 7 days or more after germination. These results indicate that zucchini acquired a high salt tolerance before germination, although the acquired salt tolerance decreased with time. This suggests that salt tolerant species may have a high salt tolerance before germination.
