Effect of sugar treatment on the quality of cut dahlia flowers

Harvesting stages and sugar treatments after harvesting were studied in Dahlia 'Nessho' and 'Kokucho', with the following results: 1. Sugar treatments of fructose were the most effective, but using inexpensive sucrose was more practical. 2. If the sucrose treatment was one and more than one time, the flower quality was improved and the flower color was darker. When combined with transport and post-processing, the quality retention period could be extended. 3. Subjecting buds at the harvesting stage to sucrose treatments improved the cut flower quality and extended the quality-retention period. 4. At less than 4% sucrose liquid density, surplus absorption of sugar could be avoided if the temperature was more than 12degC and the relative humidity was 90%. 5. The appropriate sucrose density when transporting from Kochi to the flower market was 2% in May and 1% in February.
