Application study of a copper in the animal facilities on sterilization materials against bovine viruses

Animal hygiene management in a livestock facility is important for stockbreeding promotion and safety supply of animal production food. There is a few report that the copper metal own virucidal effect evaluation. When the virucidal effect of the copper surface will be recognized, the application range of copper metal should be wider as the virucidal material. And it can be used for livestock facility as a sterilized material. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) and bovine enterovirus type 2 (BEV) were used for virucidal effect test of pure copper, brass copper fragment and copper fiber. The direct contact study of viral specimens on the pure copper, brass copper and copper fiber showed virucidal effect. The strongest virucidal effect was observed in the pure copper. Higher virucidal effect was observed in a higher copper ion density. Higher virucidal effect was observed in a higher temperature and a longer contact time. The higher virucidal effect of copper was observed in the IBRV than BEV. Virus specimen contained the tissue culture medium, but in the field condition, it should be necessary to examine the effect in water. As a result, elution of a copper ion into water was recognized, and the virucidal effect was also observed. When organic materials and salts existed in the water, copper ion density became higher. Copper metal showed the virucidal effect by an eluted copper ion, and the applicability of copper metal to the livestock facility as sterilized materials was considered to be useful.
