Russian wood seen by Roka Tokutomi

This study shows two places where Roka Tokutomi perceived 'zokibayashi,' which means forests associated with special Japanese senses, near Tolstoy's estate. Roka and Tolstoy are famous writers of Japanese and Russian, respectively. Roka's diary has been analyzed in this survey. The diary is originally written in Japanese and was sent to Tolstoy and translated into Russian. In the course of the translation, the word 'zokibayashi' was understood merely as 'forest.' Similarly, 'zokibayashi' has also been translated as 'forest of inferior timber' in English. We indicated that there exist some differences between 'zokibayashi' and 'forest.' Furthermore, Roka found an area where young deciduous trees were growing. He called it 'sorin' in Japanese, which means sparse forest. The 'sorin' was greatly favored by Tolstoy. Since the young trees usually appear with slim twigs and low trunks, their scene might construct a kind of Japanese garden made of 'zokibayashi.'
