A change of moisture content and workability on wood dried naturally after underwater storage and on kiln-dried wood

According to some carpenters, the natural-drying wood treated after underwater storage is most suitable for construction of Japanese wooden houses. That is because the workability of hand plane working, sawing and chiseling of wood dried naturally may be excellent compared with the kiln-dried wood. In this paper, the authors discussed a quantitative analysis on the workability in respect to Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) wood naturally dried after underwater storage and their kiln-dried wood. As the result, the workability on 6 kinds of hand work like planing and sawing tended to be increased as the reduction of moisture content. The wood naturally dried after underwater storage seemed to be better a little or equal in workability compared with the kiln-dried wood.
