Control of Dermanyssus gallinae infestation with cardboard traps and the susceptibility of the mites to acaricide

Dermanyssus gallinae, also known as the 'poultry red mite,' is an external parasite with a significant threat to egg-laying poultry. A large number of infestations with the mites leads to chicken death from anemia and causes heavy economic loss. Hen fatalities increased in our jurisdiction, so we conducted on-site inspection of a farm in May 2014. At autopsy, a large number of mites was visually detected on the chicken carcass and the poultry house. We judged that the death of chickens exhibiting anemia was caused by infestation with D. gallinae. We thus installed corrugated cardboard traps on the cages in the farm, and clinical signs such as anemia, decrease of egg production, and the number of death were improved. The susceptibility test for acaricide revealed that D. gallinae in the farm were less sensitive to one commercial acaricide used there. Therefore, we recommended that the farmer continue using cardboard traps in the poultry houses and apply an effective acaricide before introducing a new batch of chickens.
