Management of drying for decked logs by measurement of stress wave propagation times

The moisture content of logs strongly affects the heat generated by woodchips that are used as fuel. However, it is very difficult to dry wood-chips in a silo. Therefore, the management of moisture content is very important during the staging of the raw material, whole logs. However, these logs are typically left in large logging decks in a stockyard, making it very difficult to understand and properly manage the moisture contents in decked logs. In this study, we created a small pile of raw material, decked logs, and measured the weight of each log at regular intervals. We also measured the stress wave propagation time (SPT) between the butt ends while logs were piled. We found a strong, significant, positive correlation between the weight of logs during drying and the SPT. This makes it possible to manage the drying process for piled logs by measurement of the SPT.
