Biometry and testicular measures of rams of Santa Inês breed | Biometria e formas dos testículos em cordeiros da raça Santa Inês explorados em regime de manejo intensivo

The objective of this work was to evaluate the testicular development and the body weight, calculate the testicular volume by three different mathematical formulas and verify the testicles form of the 33 rams of Santa Inês breed, borne between January and September 2007 and created in the South region of Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The animals were weighed and the testicles measured each 28 days, since weaning (90 days) until they reach 354 days of age. The testicular measures and the body weight increased with the age, up to 12 months. The cylinder formula better appreciated the testicular volume. The testicular form predominant up to six months of age was the long / oval and from eight months was the long. The scrotal circumference did not vary with the testicular form; however, the length and the testicular volume were bigger in the long / moderate and long forms. Heaviest rams presented long testicles. It is possible to conclude that during this period of life the lambs present quick testicular growth and weight, however, they are still developing, the cylinder formula appeared more trustful to calculate the testicular volume and due to change in the testicular form it is suggested an evaluation of the testicular volume like additional criterion in the selection of Santa Inês lambs.

Objetivou-se avaliar o desenvolvimento testicular e o peso corporal, calcular o volume testicular por três diferentes fórmulas matemáticas e verificar a forma dos testículos de 33 cordeiros da raça Santa Inês, nascidos entre janeiro e setembro de 2007 e criados no Sul do Espírito Santo/Brasil. Os animais foram pesados e os testículos mensurados a cada 28 dias, do desmame (90 dias) até 354 dias de idade. As medidas testiculares e o peso corporal aumentaram com a idade, até os 12 meses. A fórmula que melhor estimou o volume testicular foi a do cilindro. A forma testicular predominante até os seis meses de idade foi a longo/oval e, a partir dos oito meses, a forma com maior freqüência foi a longa. O perímetro escrotal não variou com a forma testicular, no entanto, o comprimento e o volume testicular foram maiores nas formas longo/moderado e longo. Os cordeiros mais pesados apresentaram testículos longos. Pode-se concluir que durante este período de vida os carneiros apresentaram rápido crescimento testicular e aumento de peso, no entanto, ainda estavam se desenvolvendo. A fórmula do cilindro mostrou-se mais adequada para calcular o volume testicular e, devido à variação na forma testicular dos animais, sugere-se a medição do volume testicular como critério adicional na seleção de carneiros jovens.
