Three Japanese populations of the clover cyst nematode Heterodera trifolii were examined for their ability to reproduce on five crops and three carnation cultivars. All three populations produced cysts on white clover, azuki bean, spinach, and carnation cvs. Barbara, Cherry Tessino, and Peachy Mambo. No cysts were produced on sugar beet or broccoli. The number of cysts from the Nagano population was significantly higher than that from the Hokkaido and Aomori populations on all plants, except for white clover. The number of cysts from all populations was significantly lower on carnation cv. Barbara than on cvs. Cherry Tessino and Peachy Mambo. These results suggested that carnation cv. Barbara may be the resistant type. Variation in cyst number of the three populations on spinach and carnation cvs. Cherry Tessino and Peachy Mambo indicated variation in reproductive ability on different host plants in Japanese H. trifolii populations.
