Effects of 41years successive application of organic materials on andosol soil physicochemical properties

In humic Andosol soil with Yatsugatake volcanic ash as a base material, to which organic matter was successively applied for 41 years, the following occurred. (1) Although the nitrogen content of the soil was maintained by the application of compost, the rise in pH, accumulation of available phosphoric acid, and exchangeable bases proceeded. (2) The total carbon content of the soil gradually decreased even when rice straw compost was applied at 3t/10a/year, and could not be maintained unless cattle manure compost was applied at 2t/10a/year. In rice straw compost and cattle manure compost, the amount of persistent organic matter (acid detergent fiber, ADF) contained in compost was different, and the amount of ADF was considered to play a major role in maintaining carbon in the soil. (3) To maintain the nitrogen and carbon content of the soil, it was necessary to continue applying compost; however, to prevent imbalance of nutrients by compost application, the use of soil diagnosis and consideration of the components of compost fertilizer is necessary.
