Effectiveness of a pork product differentiation strategy characterized by mating style: A case study of TOKYO X

The aim of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of a pork product differentiation strategy based on mating style. As a case study, we targeted TOKYO X pigs, which are considered to be an excellent example, and carried out a comparison with general domestic pigs regarding quality, profit, and production head count. As a result, TOKYO X pigs were found to have superior quality, but not better profit per farrow after 2013, and a decreased head count for shipment. Therefore, the product differentiation strategy was not successful in regard to all present indicators. Based on this result, policies that can help functionalize this strategy are needed.
