Effects of ion beam irradiation on plants growth of a 'Benisashi' mune (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc.) cultivar

This study was conducted to reveal the optimum dose of ion beam irradiation for mutation breeding of the 'Benisashi' mume cultivar. Greenwood, seedling, and in vitro shoot tissues were used as irradiation samples. After ion beam irradiation, survival rate and growth increments were surveyed. 1. A 10 Gy proton ion beam irradiation dose was determined to be optimum for greenwood, based on the establishment rate and leaf number of buds grafted onto greenwood. 2. A 10 Gy carbon ion beam irradiation dose was the optimum dose for seedlings, as determined by the survival rate and incremental growth of the shoot after sowing. 3. A 20 Gy proton ion beam irradiation dose was the optimum dose for in vitro shoot tissue as indicated by survival rate and incremental growth of shoot cuttings after transplanting.
