Economic valuation of carbon sequestration in The Andean Páramo

The Andean paramo is the most biodiverse tropical high mountain region on earth, and a key provider of ecosystem services for millions of people particularly In Colombia. One of those services is carbon sequestration that is defined as the capture and storage of atmospheric CO2 in the pedosphere reducing its retention time and rate of remission. Which changes depending on the type of soil and altitudinal belt. The paramo altitudinal belts are divided, from lower to higher elevation into the sub paramo, mid-paramo and the super paramo. In a complementary manner, the chronosequence present in the paramo region is likely to provide us with valuable information on the capacities of tropical alpine plant communities to adapt to abrupt environmental changes. To find out that carbon stocks are present across two national natural parks, Cocuy and Los Nevados, with different types of soils (Volcanic and sedimentary respectively), an ordinary kriging model fed by meteorological and in situ data was used. Followed by an economic valuation using the market and substitution method. The results show that a higher presence of carbon pools at Los Nevados and at the mid-paramo belt, however, the economic value was higher at the sub-paramo belt in both parks. With these the study concludes that meteorological variables and soil type affect carbon sequestration.
