Estimation of energy-balance-based evapotranspiration in an apple orchard, Yomase district of Nagano Prefecture

Recent and predicted climate change has made appropriate use of water resources an important issue. Since irrigation water for agricultural use is no exception, accurate estimates of water required by crops in the field are needed to devise an accurate irrigation schedule. In this study, the weather conditions (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation) measured at a remote apple orchard in Yomase district, Nagano Prefecture were collected via the Internet using a mobile phone connection. An energy balance method was then used to estimate evapotranspiration. However, there were cases where a temperature difference, estimated by the energy balance method, between the canopy and the air was higher than l0℃; this cannot be correct. Based on the sensitivity analysis of each term of the energy balance equation, it turned out that this phenomenon occurred when the wind speed was zero. We conclude that this problem can be solved by interpolating the wind speeds measured before and after the zero-wind speed.
