To update our previous study, which evaluated the sales of antimicrobial agents in beef cattle, dairy cow, pigs and broilers in Japan from 2005 to 2013, we evaluated the sales of antimicrobials for the years 2014 to 2017 using data obtained thereafter. The annual sales amount of antimicrobials in active ingredient for food-producing animals in Japan through years 2014 to 2017 was 611, 622, 647 and 675 metric tons respectively and was on the increase. The biomass of food-producing animals in Japan was estimated to be around 4 million metric tons using Hosoi method and 3 million tons in terms of population correction unit (PCU) from 2014 to 2017, with no significant change from previous years. As a result, the quantities of antimicrobials sold in terms of milligram of active ingredient sold per kg PCU through the years 2014 -2017 were 203, 209,218, 229 mg/kg in all species combined respectively. The pig sector continued to be the heaviest use of antimicrobials with388-437 mg/kg PCU for these years.
