Study on selected strains of yuzu (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka): III. Characteristics of short thorn yuzu strains

Short-thorn Yuzu line '6gou' was selected in Kochi. '6gou' is naturally infected by citrus tristeza virus (CTV) YM6. Virus-free '6gou' plants were inoculated with the mild CTV strains YM2 and YM3. The selection of YM2 and YM3 is described in another report. We developed '7gou' (YM2 inoculated) and '8gou' (YM3 inoculated) Yuzu lines. The tree and fruit characteristics of these three lines were investigated at five locations (Kochi-Asakura, Aki, Kami, Kochi-Tosayama and Shimanto). 1. The thorns of '6gou', '7 gou' and '8gou' were shorter than those of '2gou'. Additonally, '6gou', '7gou' and '8gou' had fewer thorns than '2gou'. More specifically, '6gou' had the fewest thorns among the short-thorn Yuzu lines. Both '7gou' and '8gou' had about the same number of thorns. '6gou' was affected by changes in genetic traits and aging. 2. '7gou' exhibited relatively little stem pitting, similar to '2gou'. In contrast, '6gou' and '8gou' exhibited moderate and extensive stem pitting, respectively. 3. '6gou', '7gou' and '8gou' pericarps had few convex canker cellosis symptoms, similar to the '2gou' pericarps. 4. '6gou', '7gou', '8gou' and '2gou' had a little late coloring stage than '2gou'. There were no differences in the other examined characteristics. Thus, '6gou' and '7gou' were selected, as superior Yuzu line of short-thorn and CTV resistance.
