Waitomo reserves : an alternative form of management for a group of reserves at Waitomo

The Waitomo area has a number of Scenic and Recreation Reserves which are managed in a variety of ways by the Tourist Hotel Corporation, Waitomo Distrct Council, Waitomo Domain Board, and directly by the Department of Lands and Survey. Little liaison exists between managing authorities to ensure that the various reserves complement each other. Development and use tend to be fragmented and based on each management authority's specific interests, with little, if any attempts being made to co-ordinate an appreciation of the rich diversity of attractions within the area. The reserves concerned are studied and the scientific, educational and recreational potential of each analysed. A management policy is suggested which will present a more unified system of management and more profitably utilise the diverse reserves in the area.
