Genetic engineering is rapidly being acknowledged as an emerging technology that has immense potential to improve the health, living standards, economy and environment for New Zealanders. However, some aspects of the technology challenge social values, legal and environmental protection, and production systems. This study was undertaken to present a balanced discussion document describing the science of and the social, ethical, commercial, safety, legal and environmental issues associated with genetic engineering.
