Echinococcosis - disease monograph series - 12
2016
The paper provides detailed information on the incidence, prevalence, and prevention of cystic echinococcosis (CE) also called hydatidosis or hydatid disease, a zoonotic disease caused by various species of cestode parasites. Taking into consideration the public health impact, condemnation at slaughter, production losses and other economic burden in developing countries, estimated annual global economic losses due to CE in livestock is over USD 2 billion. Most of the global concern is due to infection with E. granulosus, which causes hydatid cysts in humans. Deliberate feeding of farm dogs with offal containing hydatid cysts has been a major cause of CE transmission leading eventually to human disease.
