Critical perspectives on open development : empirical interrogation of theory construction

Over the last ten years, “open” innovations—the sharing of information and communications resources without access restrictions or cost—have emerged within international development. But do these innovations empower poor and marginalized populations? This book examines whether, for whom, and under what circumstances the free, networked, public sharing of information and communication resources contribute (or not) toward a process of positive social transformation. The contributors offer cross-cutting theoretical frameworks and empirical analyses that cover a broad range of applications, emphasizing the underlying aspects of open innovations that are shared across contexts and domains. The book first outlines theoretical frameworks that span knowledge stewardship, trust, situated learning, identity, participation, and power decentralization. It then investigates these frameworks across a range of institutional and country contexts, considering each in terms of the key emancipatory principles and structural impediments it seeks to address. Taken together, the chapters offer an empirically tested theoretical direction for the field.

Au cours des dix dernières années, des innovations « collaboratives » (échange de ressources d’information et de communication sans coût ni restriction d’accès) ont vu le jour dans le cadre du développement international. Mais ces innovations bénéficient-elles aux populations pauvres et marginalisées? Ce livre cherche à déterminer si le partage public, gratuit et en réseau des ressources d’information et de communication contribue (ou non) à un processus de transformation sociale positive, quels en sont les bénéficiaires et dans quelles circonstances. Les contributeurs proposent des cadres théoriques transversaux et des analyses empiriques qui couvrent un large éventail d’applications, en mettant l’accent sur les aspects sous-jacents des innovations collaboratives partagées dans plusieurs contextes et domaines. Le livre décrit d’abord les cadres théoriques qui concernent la gestion des connaissances, la confiance, l’apprentissage en situation, l’identité, la participation et la décentralisation du pouvoir. Il étudie ensuite ces cadres dans une série de contextes institutionnels et nationaux, en les confrontant aux principes d’émancipation clés et aux obstacles structurels qu’il cherche à résoudre. Dans leur ensemble, les chapitres offrent une orientation théorique vérifiée empiriquement sur le terrain.
