We describe how a research organization can support long-term and sustainable areas of design thinking and “colleges of the unknown”, to reinforce the individual and collective response to evolving research, society and working contexts. We use design theory to model/highlight the background and dynamic paths between C and K areas underlying the example of a specific research centre. In doing so, we avoid abusive generalization; this risk is prevented by the engagement of epistemology in the management process, as under-determining discipline. The objective is to make perceive the invariants and the non-standard evaluation criteria to be used to assess the quality and impact of the results. It is also to evidence the generic area built, the specific operators used and the major principles governing the management process.
