Show more [+] Less [-]This work deals with the potential influence of different benthic communities on the sediment dynamics of the coastal zone and, specifically with the modifications introduced by the communities on the bottom roughness and their effects in wave propagation across the coastal profile. Time series of video observations of the sea bottom in the Ebro delta inner shelf were analyzed in order to estimate the bottom roughness associated with biological morphological components. Biological roughness was mainly caused by ophiuroids and shells tanatocenosis that change their abundance along the study period. The total biological roughness (Kbio) ranges between 0.27 and 0.81 cm. These observations have been introduced in a wave propagation model in order to carry out a sensitivity analysis about the significance of biological roughness under different wave conditions
