Show more [+] Less [-]Numerous studies have shown that moderate red wine consumption can evoke some beneficial effects to human health as cardioprotection and/or neuroprotection, attributed, at least in part, to the phenolic compounds that are present in wine, which show qualitative and quantitative differences, depending on factors such as grape variety and winemaking technique. The neuroprotective and the vascular smooth muscle relaxation effects of four monovarietal Spanish red wines were studied and were related to their polyphenolic composition. Every wine showed dose-dependent neuroprotective effect and vasodilatory response. Wine from cv Merlot variety induced the maximum effect for both assays, this wine showing the highest content in procyanidins and anthocyanidins.
