Mögliche Synergie-Effekte zwischen Landwirtschaft und Naturschutz unter den Bedingungen des Klimawandels

Auch wenn es nicht möglich ist zukünftige Klimaänderungen derzeit exakt zu prognostizieren und die erwartete Veränderung einzelner agrarrelevanter Parameter wie Temperatur, CO2-Gehalt der Luft, Niederschlagsverteilung und -höhe im Jahresverlauf zu quantifizieren, so ist der Wandel im Klima doch unaufhaltsam. Während gemeinhin versucht wird, regional und global die Risiken des Klimawandels, zum Beispiel für die landwirtschaftliche Produktion abzuschätzen, sind Hypothesen für synergistische Effekte von Landwirtschaft und Naturschutz rar. Mit Zunahme der Temperatur ist auf der Nordhalbkugel eine höhere Produktivität landwirtschaftlicher Standorte zu erwarten, die eine höhere Düngungsintensität nach sich zieht, die wiederum zu erhöhten Nährstoffverlusten führen kann. Durch die Ausweitung des Anbaus von Leguminosen könnte die Stickstoff-Zufuhr in der Landwirtschaft deutlich verringert und gleichzeitig die Biodiversität erhöht werden. Längere Vegetationszeiten, verbunden mit höheren Temperaturen könnten sich in einer vielseitigeren Fruchtfolge widerspiegeln, da sich das Spektrum der in unseren Regionen anbauwürdigen Kulturpflanzen vergrößert. Die vielleicht bedeutendste synergistische Wirkung betrifft den vorbeugenden Hochwasserschutz. Nach derzeitigem Stand des Wissens kann dem Ausmaß der Überflutung entgegengewirkt werden, indem die Infiltrationsleistung der Böden nachhaltig verbessert wird. Unter diesem Aspekt erbringen ökologisch wirtschaftende Betriebe die größte Umweltleistung.

At present it is not feasible to provide a precise prognosis about future changes in temperature, CO2-content of the air and (progression of) precipitation, which are relevant parameters for productivity in agriculture. Nevertheless there is no doubt that climate change is taking place. Usually, attempts are made to evaluate regional and global risks of climate change relevant to agricultural production, but hypotheses for synergistic effects between agriculture and nature conservation are scarce. Generally, an increasing temperature will increase crop production levels in the northern hemisphere, which will justify a higher fertiliser input and thus increased nutrient losses to the environment. Here, the expansion of legumes in the crop rotation may contribute efficiently to counteract the problem, and in doing so biodiversity of crop rotations will be promoted. Longer growing seasons, combined with higher temperatures offer the chance for diversification of crop rotations as the spectrum of suitable crops is broadened. Possibly the most important synergistic effect between agriculture and nature conservation is related to the protection against flooding. Based on current knowledge an increase of the infiltration rate of agricultural soils will reduce the flooded area. In this respect organic farming possibly provides the best environmental benefits.
